Announcing something NEW
A new style of bulletin board is up and running here. The old board (this one) will keep running for a while and maybe even permanently depending on how the voting goes. There is a voting section on the new board as to what the members here prefer, so go look at the new board and vote for keeping the new or keeping this board.
There are many adavantages to the new board, many cool features that I think you will prefer over this one. Granted right now there is nothing there but as time goes by, think of how nice it will be to use a search to find previous posts, this board does not give us a search engine.
There is downside, you will have to register to post messages on the new board, sorry but it has to be done that way, I explain why here click on the Announcing a New Bulletin Board for Singercars to read about it. The new bulletin board is at http://www.singercars.com/phpbb you can read any posts there but to post you must register or use this board, the problem with using this one is that people may not read it as often.

Subject: Restoration Fasteners - Bolts, Nuts & Screws

I want to share a couple of web sites that I have found particularly helpful in locating fasteners for restoring my Singer. The first is Classic Fasteners. Even though they are located in Australia, I have found them to be a comprehensive site for BSF, BSCY, BSW, BA, UNC, UNF & Metric bolts & nuts. They can be contacted at "www.classicfasteners.com.au" .
The other site, I just recently found is MSC Stainless Fasteners. They are an excellent source for stainless steel nuts, bolts & screws. Until I found them, I had been unsuccessful in locating slotted stainless steel wood screws and self-tapping screws. Phillips screws can be readily found locally, but slotted stainless screws were difficult to find. There web site is "www.msc-stainless-fasteners.com".
When I restored my 1952 4AD, I used stainless phillips screws for all my exterior and interior exposed surfaces. It has been pointed out to me at several car shows that phillips screws were not available in the 1950's. I was able to replace over 300 screws (including a few spares) for less than $50USD.
I hope this information is helpful to someone.

Subject: Don't Blow a Gasket...

I'm a pre-war guy really, but have owned three Roadsters and restored a 4AD for a friend.
I do recall that the 4AD had a very thin original gasket between the diff casting flange and the axle casing. Both mating surfaces were machined and the gasket I made was brown wrapping paper soaked in linseed oil. This was cut out using an X-acto knife and a hole punch. I spray both surfaces with a gasket adhesive (Felpro I think) and torqued down the studs. Don't recall it ever leaking, but this seems a different procedure to the one others have described. OK, and, yes, this type od gasket was used in various places on the pre-war cars! :-)
There are also two types of 4AD diff; Salsbury and Moss and I don't recall which this car had.

Gene: I just saw your message about needing to make a rear axle housing gasket. I made a new gasket that goes between the axle housing and the axle carrier (or "pumpkin") or whatever it's called for my 9 axle when I installed a 4AD carrier in it. I still have the cardboard template I made up for it. I used heavy duty gasket material (not cork) that I got from the local auto supply. I can send you the template if you want. I imagine the gasket is the same for the 9, 4A, and 4AD as I was able to put a 1951-2 4AD axle carrier into a 1949 rear axle, but maybe others on the list can chime in with more info. I believe David Green supplied the axle shaft seals and the pinion shaft seal, but can't remember for sure (I'm handsome, but forgetful). Making the gasket is relatively easy with a hole punch set.

My first try was 1/16 cork, too thin to take up any gaps so I went with 1/8 cork and still had some leaks although those were minor. I then went with some rubber impregnated 1/16 cork and form-a-gasket (blue), the rubber impregnated stuff is NOT supposed to leak but I was tired to taking it apart and making gaskets.

but of course it will leak, I went through 2 gaskets with leaks when I rebuilt the rear axle, I finally gave up and bought stock in a silicone company. Its less of a problem on the 4AD because the axle housing is pretty strong but on the Le Mans where its just stamped steel, you need a thick gasket and lots of silicone. Which I hate the silicone stuff, wish it had never been invented but it did serve its purpose

I promise not to let the magazine article go to my head. I promise to continue to associate with the common Singer owners out there. ;-)
I picked up a copy of the magazine myself on Sunday afternoon, a 75-mile round trip to get one. (yes I called first).
I was pleased with the article and it was largely the way I presented the story. That's because nearly all my comments were written in the standard form and release statement they have for all the cars. Ironically, I asked the photographer/writer not to take a photo of the leaky Solex, or at least let me wipe it off, which I did. So what did he do? He made it a feature photo, with shiny fuel all over it, with a pull out quote to highlight the fact that it leaks. Geeshh.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun doing it and I'll give a full account of the behind the scenes in an upcoming Newletter article. And, yes, I did say kind words about the club and it's members and I meant EVERY WORD of it. It's a great bunch of people and I'm proud to be part of it.
I took the Singer out for what will likely be the final trip of the season on Saturday to fill the tank for a long winter nap. The weather here was about 60, perfect for T-Shirts and top-down singer driving and I vowed to drive it even more next year.
Thanks again guys and gals for all the effort that is put into the club and for the kind words about the article.

THANKS to all for your help. THE SINGER MADE ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. A 26 mile trip to test the brakes and etc. A small problem with the seatbelt mounting, the bolts hit the drive shaft and have to be turned around. Also, a leak in the rear end. Suspect differential seal, will check today. Mike, I fixed the hand brake by making an oak button to replace the broken plastic piece. The mechanisum was so tight that it would not go all the way in. This was part of the brake balancing problem. It now works fine. Brakes are OK, BUT will need adjustment now that we have used them in the hills of West Virginia. As you might suspect, the 26 miles trip was in the hills, but she( the Roadster) did just fine. For every hill you go up, there is one you must go down. Many eyes where turned as we motored down the road. A complement to a very special type car not usually seen in our neck of the woods.
Again, many thanks to all in the past 6 years of our restoration. Looking forward to Stowe and other shows in 2006.

I picked up the Raynor LM copy of Hemmings about a week ago and Tony himself sent me a copy as well! I suspect it will be a few weeks before we see Clifford in the next issue, but I will be keeping my eyes peeled.
Thanks Ed for planning an article on the 'story behind the story'. Did you also get my note asking about a few lines on Stowe from the perspective of the picnic drive and the tailgate picnic? We're working on that issue now.
Sorry for the delay on the magazines, folks, but there has been a lot going on since Stowe, at home and at work, plus Paul and I have been setting up a little side business to help fund the Singer activities. See www.designparavion.com, if you're interested in aircraft. The site is still in development, but you'll get the idea! The SOC 100 and NASOC 100 issues of NASOC NEWS will be special collectors editions, so we hope you will find them worth the wait!
As far as the pistol grip handbrake goes, the T series MG used a floor mounted 'fly off' lever type not unlike the Singer Le Mans. There were many other Brit cars in the 40's, 50's and 60's that used the rather unsporting 'umbrella handle' as it's also called, so it might be possible to track one down. I'd also try that Master of All Things Roadster, Bill Haverly in the UK. His address and contact details are printed in every NEWSFLASH supplied with every issue of NASOC NEWS.

I'll second Gene A.'s comments about Paul Barber. I've bought stuff from him too and he's reasonable and his stuff is more than useable. Sometimes his organizational skills (where is it?) are suspect, but I know he's got a lot of 4AD stuff down there. Another option might be Moss Motors. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if an MG T series rig has the same brake release. Might be worth checking out.
As an aside, the article in Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car about our Singer has been published, but I haven't seen it. I've gotten calls from two different companies wanting sell the story matted and framed for $200. I've declined, (that will buy a lot of singer parts)which means I still haven't seen it. The guy who wrote the story was supposed to send a copy, but so far has stiffed me. Does any one in the club subscribed to the magazine? I think the subscribers have had it for two weeks, but it's not on the newstands yet, at least not around these parts. I think the title is something like "barn fresh brit" or something like that.
I'll let you know when I see it and Phillip, I'll write something up for the club mag on the "behind the scenes" aspect as you suggested as soon as I see how the article turned out. Maybe I can get permission for us to print a photo of the article with the car, or something like that.

Mike, I beleave that I have found the problem with balancing my brakes on the 4AD. The emergency brake assembly is bad. The handle will not go all the way down. I have taken it out of the car, but the plastic button to release the hand brake is broken. Can you or anyone point me in the right direction to find this assembly. I have written Paul B. to see if he has any available.
Also, the springs are to long and will not pull the levers all the way. I can push the lever under the bonnet all the way down, but the spring is very lose. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also Mike, hold on the measurements of the rods until I can complete this evaluation.

Gene, I have put a PDF on how to do this here. Basically the long rod you want to disconnect is at the crossmember back by the rear axle, there is a pivot point back there and that is where you disconnect. The PDF has a diagram of this.

I am trying to balance the front and rear brakes. The manual said to disconnect the long intermediate rod from the long lever on the chassis cross member. Can anyone identify for me the rod they are talking about??
Without disconnecting this rod, I cannot get to the next step, which is to adjust the length of the master cylinder push rod (M) so that pin (N) working in the slot (S) is approx. in the position shown in Figure 7 on page 4 of brakes in manual. I would appreciate any and all help or suggestions.

If the gentleman you refer to is the one in the UK that runs Typecast, who manufacture alloy brake drums to order, the answer is no. However, I believe that the person who is doing the Singer drums for us actually produced a number of the original patterns for Typecast. Our drums are a 'made in Canada' product and the result of real British craftsmanship.
We will add you to the list. Thank you for supporting this project.
I'll forward a photo sample as soon as I can get it sorted and will provide you will more details on pricing, etc, as soon as we see how many people are interested.

This message is really aimed at anyone out there with a 1933 to 1935 Singer Nine sports car...
We're currently in the budget stages for a project to produce a run of finned alloy brake drums for the '33 to '35 type cars. These would be fully machined and feature a steel liner. Just the right '30's period 'go faster' item to set off your wire wheels and get better performance than your old worn out pressed steel drums!
We have two orders in principle right now, but need to have six to eight orders to make it worth firing up the production machinery. So a minimum of four more orders will be required before we can start. Price will depend on the number produced. An 'order' means a set of four drums and the price will be in Canadian dollars! What a deal! :-)
NOTE: There are two types of drum on the Singer models of this period:
The early type has the back plate which wraps over the rim of the drum, and the later type has the drum lip wrapping over the backplate. We'd need to know which type you have when ordering as the rim machining is obviously different.

Bonjour Pascal,
The engine and gearbox on the 4A were painted a primer brown colour. The electrical items such as starter and generator were black, as was the AC air cleaner unit. I have seen some engines with a black valve cover and some primer brown. The oil filler cap was chrome plated as were the acorn nuts holding it in place.

First, you should try the pins as is, being 1mm. oversize, they might fit the hinge, if the wear is not to bad, from there you'll see, how much to be drilled on each hinge, may be it's only the bottom part of the hinge that's weared out. Robert.

Robert: many thanks for sending the pins. I have a question: should the brass hinges be drilled out(or reamed)to fit the new oversize pins or should the stainless pins be milled down to fit the hinges? Drilling or reaming out the hinges might leave them too weak, as the wall thickness in that area would be greatly reduced. I probably should have a machine shop handle this rather than screw it up myself.
On the tonneau cover, that was Gene Mulder who wanted a pattern. There are 2 Genes's on the list--I'm the handsome one :) :)

In an earlier post I had asked if anyone had seen the Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car magazine with Tony Raynor's '36 Le Mans in it. Well, ask and ye shall receive! I walked into my local book shop yesterday and found it!
Issue 2-October 2005-features a 6 page full-colour spread on Tony's car. In spite of the usual gaffs in the content, especially Singer specs and history, it's a good piece and a great booster for the marque. Well done Tony!
There is also a section in the magazine called 'Drivable Dream' and that's where we look forward to seeing 'Clifford', Ed Ballam's time-warp original 4AD in a future issue.
And, if we're really lucky, we may also see a write-up on our activities at Stowe in an upcoming issue of Classic & Sportcar.
All a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful Centennial season!

Hey Gene,
You may already have picked up the messages, but Paul and I found some photo references to the Roadster tonneau cover in the Brooklands Book "Singer Sportscars". Paul had scanned my copy so should have sent you the files.
It may be of interest to other members that Robert 'Sir Stainless' Moreau used my original Roadster top as a pattern and had it copied. His trimmer made patterns and, as a result, we can offer original design Roadster tops at Canadian dollar prices. If you check out the Stowe photos, you can see the superb quality of the top on his 'FrankenSinger'. Perhaps tonneaus are next. What do you say Robert? :-)
